Gary Schwab is the principal of the Property Tax Consultants and has worked solely in the property valuation/tax assessment business in South Carolina for over 35 years.
Working for a county assessor’s office for five years upon graduation from The Darla Moore Business School at the University of South Carolina provided him with the professional valuation training and hands on experience that he has relied on ever since.
As an employee of a county tax assessor’s office, his duties included valuing thousands of properties which included residential single-family homes, vacant lots, commercial acreage, agricultural acreage, subdivisions, miscellaneous commercial properties, and apartment properties.
Besides valuing new and existing properties for the county tax assessor, he successfully defended his valuations at Board of Assessment Appeals hearings.
Several years after leaving the county training grounds, Mr. Schwab volunteered to serve a two-year term on a Board of Assessment Appeals. Twelve years later, including ten years as its chairman, his term final term concluded. During his time on the board he presided over hundreds of appeal hearings of all types of properties. His duties as chairman included drafting the board’s bi-monthly rulings that were the final valuation decisions of the board.
Training as an employee at the assessor’s office and volunteering to serve on an appeals board for 12 years, he gained invaluable insight and experience in the assessment appeal process. Mr. Schwab is one of few that has been involved with property tax valuation and assessment appeals from all three sides: as an employee of a county tax assessor’s office; as chairman of an assessment appeals board, and; for the last 15 years, as a property tax consultant working for South Carolina property owners. Years of diversified experience, along with a history of successful assessment appeals, has allowed Property Tax Consultants to become trusted and respected property tax experts in South Carolina.
